As several critics have remarked, the bruised, booze-ravaged troubadour is like a real-life Bad Blake, the character that won Jeff Bridges an Oscar® nomination in Crazy Heart. Even Hynes refers to himself in the third person: there’s Ron, who is basically a decent guy, and then there’s The Man of a 1000 Songs character, the alter ego he sings about, and who has a way of wreaking havoc with his personal life.
If you think his take on himself is nothing more than a cute way of side-stepping responsibility, be assured there is nothing remotely cute about this troubled, driven and searingly honest tunesmith.
That said, Hynes is considered to be one of Canada’s premier singer-songwriters. He has created beautifully crafted songs for nearly 35 years and is a six-time East Coast Music Award winner, a Genie Award winner, and a past JUNO, CCMA and Canadian Folk Music Award nominee. He holds an Honorary PhD from Memorial University for his contribution to the cultural life of his beloved Newfoundland and Labrador, and is the recent recipient of the SOCAN National Achievement Award.
In the words of Frank Davies, Founder of the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame, "He's not just the Man Of A Thousand Songs; he's the man of a treasure chest full of gems - timeless, brilliant, classic works of art that celebrate simple everyday events in the lives of common men."
