It's titled H&G and principal photography began one week ago today. The wrap date has been set for Sunday, September 2. Production is fearlessly moving ahead in a true independent fashion. Together with a micro crew of six, a micro budget, and a cast led by newcomers, the Red Czarinas are creating art that tells a story. That story is what inspired over one hundred actors to audition, and drew some of the finest up-and-coming crew members in the city.
"This film is an absolute labour of love," said producer Ashley Hirt. "We only have a budget of $5000 – but we have a surplus of talent with our all-Winnipeg cast and crew." Producer Rebecca Gibson added, "This project is fuelled by the DIY spirit." And producer Rebecca Sandulak said "Our director (Danishka Esterhazy) is known for making beautiful and heart-breaking films. We expect H&G to find an audience both locally and around the world."
In H&G we meet a girl and boy. Brother and sister. Living in poverty and neglect. Lost in the woods. They see a house, rush toward it…it is magical. Full of good food, soft sheets, love and care. But in this house, danger lurks – and all Harley and Gemma have is each other. The Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel takes a modern, neorealistic twist in H&G. Written by Danishka Esterhazy and Rebecca Gibson.
The film is an ensemble of Winnipeg actors including Ashley Rebecca Moore, Tony Porteous and Ferron Guerreiro (who starred in Esterhazy’s first feature Black Field, which won Best Feature Drama at the 2011 Vancouver Women in Film Festival, and Best Canadian Feature at the 2010 Female Eye Film Festival. H&G introduces 6-year old Annika Irving as Harley and 9-year old Breazy
Diduck-Wilson as Gemma.
