<The End of Time>

(September 14, 2012 - Montréal, Québec) As mentioned in an item about Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, a major part of any large film festival, including the Toronto International Film Festival is the deals being cut behind the glitz and glamour. Now, Peter Mettler's The End of Time is in the news as several distribution deals have been completed for the feature length documentary.

First Run Features, one of America's notable distributors of documentary and foreign films, has announced that it has acquired The End of Time for distribution in the United States. Marc Mauceri, Vice President of First Run Features, said, "I've been a fan of Peter for many years, and am very pleased that we will work side by side on the release of his wondrous, thought-provoking new film."

The End of Time was also picked up by Palace Films (Australia) and Against Gravity (Poland). Theatrical releases by Switzerland’s Look Now! (October 2012) and Canada’s Mongrel Media (December 2012) had been previously announced.

Produced by Cornelia Seitler and Brigitte Hofer (maximage), Ingrid Veninger (pUNK Films for Grimthorpe) and Gerry Flahive (National Film Board of Canada), the film had its world premiere at the Festival del film Locarno in August, where it screened in Official Competition and won the Premio Qualita di Vita Prize for Best Environmental Film, awarded by the Youth Jury. The NFB’s Christina Rogers handled the USA and Australian negotiations, while Cornelia Seitler oversaw European sales.

Working at the limits of what can easily be expressed, Mettler takes on the elusive subject of time. From the particle accelerator at CERN, where scientists seek to probe regions of time we cannot see, to lava flows in Hawaii (pictured above) which have overwhelmed all but one home on the south side of Big Island; from the disintegration of inner city Detroit, to a Hindu funeral rite near the place of Buddha’s enlightenment, Mettler explores our perception of time. He dares to dream the movie of the future while also immersing us in the wonder of the everyday. The third in a trilogy which began with Picture of Light (1996), and was followed by Gambling, Gods & LSD (2002), The End of Time re-affirms Mettler as a visionary deeply committed to a unique and long-standing cinematic endeavour.
