CSC & Revue Cinema Launch New Series
By Staff

Canadian Film News

(July 21, 2010 - Toronto, Ontario) – The Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) has joined forces with Toronto's historic Revue Cinema to present a new series of films devoted to the art of cinematography. The program, Great Cinematography in Revue, kicks off on August 1st and will run roughly every two months after that. The first offering is the 1998 Terrence Malick film The Thin Red Line, which was shot by two-time Oscar winner John Toll.

Curating and hosting the screenings is Alan Bacchus Toronto-based writer, filmmaker and film industry professional - a film contributor for Exclaim!, the creator of Daily Film Dose.com and the Business Affairs Specialist for Astral’s The Harold Greenberg Fund. He also programs Canadian Cinema in Revue, also at The Revue.

The idea behind the series is to offer a post-screening Q&A with each film’s Director of Photography in an effort to engage the audience on the artistic and technical aspects of cinematography. Los Angeles-based Toll will take part in the August 1st discussion via Skype. Moderating the Q&A will be Arthur Cooper, CSC, the Director of Photography on a number of successful feature films including One Week and Young People F*cking.

The Thin Red Line, screening at 3pm on August 1st, is often called "an elegant and poetic adaptation" of James Jones’ acclaimed novel about the dramatic Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. Starring Sean Penn, the cast includes George Clooney, John Cusack, Adrien Brody, Woody Harrelson and Elias Koteas.

Toronto's Revue Cinema first opened in 1912. After earning the title of longest continuously operating cinema in Ontario and possibly Canada , it closed in June, 2006. The neighbourhood rallied, however, and with the support of local residents, businesses and cinephiles, reopened in October, 2007. It is operated by the not-for-profit, community-based Revue Film Society.

The non-profit Canadian Society of Cinematographers was established in 1957 to promote the art and craft of cinematography and to recognize the common bonds that link film and video professionals, from the aspiring student and camera assistant to the news veteran and senior director of photography.
