The Englishman's Boy (2008)

The Englishman's Boy is a complicated tale that unravels over two centuries, taking place in Saskatchewan's Cypress Hills in 1873 and in 1920s Hollywood. Michael Therriault plays a young writer who is hired by a ruthless movie mogul Damon Ira Chance (Bob Hoskins) to track down a grizzled Western actor by the name of Shorty McAdoo (Nicholas Campbell) to try to mine the old guy's tall tales for a movie project. We learn that McAdoo's past is tied to an historical atrocity that occurred some fifty years earlier in 1873. That was when "the Englishman's boy" (newcomer Michael Eisner), hooked up with a psychopathic hunter named Tom Hardwick (R.H. Thomson) and his posse of misfits. On the hunt for a group of horse thieves, the posse massacred the Assiniboine Indians in the Cypress Hills in what is now Saskatchewan. The mini-series slowly reveals the connection between the lonely, footloose Englishman's boy and McAdoo, the movie cowboy. The screenplay was written and rewritten by Vanderhaeghe from his Governor General's Award-winning book — initially as a feature film and then as a mini-series.
