Record Nominations for Canucks at 2010 Oscars
By Wyndham Wise, Contributing Editor

Canadian Film News
(Macrh 3, 2010 - Toronto, Ontario) – This year a record number of Canadian filmmakers and films received Oscar® nominations – 14 nominations spread out over seven films, although only one of those films is officially Canadian, and even then it’s only a minority co-production. This beats the previous record set at the 2008 Oscars®, when 10 Canadian filmmakers and films were nominated, and none won. With any luck, our nominated-to-winner ratio will be better this year.

For my money, the best bet to take home the coveted gold-plated statuette is one of the two expats competing for Best Director and Best Picture: Kapuskasing-born James Cameron for Avatar and Montreal-born Jason Reitman for Up in the Air. Cameron is also up for Best Editor and Reitman for Best Adapted Screenplay, while his father, Ivan Reitman, received his first-ever nomination as the co-producer of Up in the Air.

In the category of Art Direction there are three Canadians competing head-to-head, Anastasia Masaro for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Canada/U.K./France co-production directed by Terry Gilliam, Patrice Vermette for The Young Victoria, a U.S./U.K. co-production and not a Canadian film, although because its director, Jean-Marc Vallée, is from Quebec, some critics have mistakenly claimed it as our own, and Gordon Sim, the set decorator on the musical Nine (U.S./Italy). Sim previously won for his work on Chicago. In the category of Best Costumes, Monique Prudhomme is nominated for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

District 9 (U.S./New Zealand), a dystopian view of the future set in the shantytowns of South Africa, surprisingly produced a number of nominations for Canadians. Its director, Neill Blomkamp, is a South African by birth, but he moved to Vancouver as a teenager and studied at the Vancouver Film School. He made one Canadian short and worked on the series Stargate SG-1, which was shot in Vancouver. Blomkamp, who now is a Canadian citizen, and his personal and professional writing partner, Vancouver-born Terri Tatchell, are up for Best Adapted Screenplay, as is the film’s editor, Julian Clarke, who is nominated in the category, and members of the visual effects crew, Dan Kaufman and Robert Habros from Vancouver, for Best Visual Effects.

And last, but certainly not least, the Toronto-born actor Christopher Plummer finally got an Oscar nod for his portrayal of the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station, a U.K./Germany/Russia co-production. The 81-year-old veteran, who has been acting in films since 1958 – his first was Nicolas Ray’s Wind across the Everglades – has been in contention a number of times, but this is his first nomination. Unfortunately he’s up against Christoph Waltz from Inglourius Basterds, who, after wins at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, has a virtual lock on the Best Supporting Actor category.
