Gil Bellows had a pretty good film career going before finally reaching a wide audience thanks to his role on the TV sitcom, Ally McBeal. He studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Southern California, then tried his hand in New York appearing on stage and in episodic TV roles on shows like Law & Order. His film debut was in the crtically acclaimed prison drama The Shawshank Redemption in 1994, three years before landing the role of Billy Thomas on Ally McBeal. His character was originally a one season idea, but he ended up staying for three, leaving in 2000. The cast of the show shared a 1998 Screen Actors Guild award as Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
