Geneviève Bujold's education began in a convent, but she dropped out to pursue a career as an actor. She studied first at the Québec Conservatory of Drama before joining Le Rideau Vert repertory company making her stage debut in The Barber of Seville. She would go on to star as St. Joan for the same company. Shortly after making her screen debut she moved to France and appared in a French production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. She was signed to co-star with Yves Montand in 1965's La Guerre est finie and reached international star status a few years later when she costarred in Anne of the Thousand Days. She was married for a time to director Paul Almond.
