Barbara Hamilton attended the University of Toronto and began her career at Hart House Theatre before beginning her professional career in a production of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. She was known as the funniest woman in Canada, with a face that could cause hilarity and a voice that easily carried to the back of the hall as well as across the stage. Hamilton created the role of Marilla in the first Charlottetown Festival production of Anne of Green Gables. To honour her long contribution to the stage, the Dora Mavor Moore Awards created the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award in 1996 to be given to those legends in Canadian Show Business who have demonstrated "excellence and professionalism in the performing arts."
