Alexander Ludwig plays the role of Cato in The Hunger Games. Donald Surtherland also has a role. Before he was cast as the brutal District 2 tribute Cato in The Hunger Games, the 19-year-old actor was considered for another role: good-natured Peeta from District 11. It was the film's director, Gary Ross, who thought Ludwig was better for the role of Cato and handed him a script asking him to read the part cold without any chance to get familiar with the character. Ross liked what he heard and saw. Ludwig was happy to make the switch saying that his favorite thing about his role as Cato is "playing the bad ass and getting to be very evil."
