 Stephen McHattie started out in life as Stephen McHattie Smith and first tried his hand as a stage actor, making his Broadway debut in The American Dream in 1968. Two years later he was cast to appear with Julie Harris, Eli Wallch and Hal Holbrock in The People Next Door which launched his film and television career but he continued to show up on stage. Other Broadway credits include Twelfth Night, and, Mourning Becomes Electra, both in 1972; The Iceman Cometh in 1974; Heartbreak House in 1984; You Never Can Tell in 1987, and Ghetto in 1989 which brought him a Drama Desk Award as Outstanding Actor in a Play. McHattie's older brother is also an actor.
