John Neville didn't come to Canada until 1972 following a long and distinguished career in England as a classical actor, associate producer and theatre director. His first job in Canada was as artisitic director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta between 1973 and 1978. He then travelled to Halifax to serve as artistic director of the Neptune Theatre from 1978 to 1983. He will best be remembered for having been Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival from 1986-1989. He had made his acting debut in Canada at the Stratford Festival in a critically acclaimed performance as Don Armado in Love's Labour's Lost in 1983. Outside of the theatre he had a vibrant film and television career, most notably when
Terry Gilliam cast him in the title role of The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen, and later as “The Well-Manicured Man” on the hit series, The X-Files. He died of Alzheimer’s disease at Wellesley Central Place in Toronto.
