Character actresses are not as common as their male counterparts in today's film industry. However, Alberta Watson has made a name for herself by specializing in a certain type of character. Since her career began in the late 1970s, she has repeatedly played sultry maternal types, and in particular cool, no-nonsense women. She is perhaps best known for her role as Madeline on the cult cable-TV series Nikita.
