Katheryn Winnick's parents enrolled the whole family in martial arts when the future actor was just seven years old. She attained her first black belt at the age of 13 and by time she was 16 she ranked second in Canada in tae kwon do and karate. It was her expertise in martial arts that led her into a movie career. When David Cronenberg was filming eXistenZ in 1998, he brought Winnick in to teach martial arts to Jennifer Jason Leigh. For the movie When Nietzsche Wept, which was shot in Bulgaria, Winnick plays the role of Lou Salome, the famous Russian poet that Nietzsche fell in love with.
