Denys Arcand is one of the most important filmmakers to emerge in Quebec in the 1960s. He was honoured as Best Director at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for Les invasions barbares, which was also given Best Foreign-Language Film at the 2004 Academy Awards. In Canada, the film was honoured as Best Picture at the 2004 Genie Awards and Denys Arcand picked up both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Awards.
