In his early films, Clay Borris was one of the few directors working in Canada making films about working-class life. Many of these first movies were drawn from his own experiences and they often featured members of his family. He wrote, directed and co-produced Rose's House, a docudrama, which earned four 1978 Genie Award nominations, including Best Screenplay and Best Film, and a 1978 Silver Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. His first feature film, Alligator Shoes, which he wrote and co-produced, received four 1982 Genie Award nominations, including Best Screenplay. It won the 1981 Mannheim Film Festival Golden Dugat for Best First Feature Film Director. It was also shown at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival Director's Fortnight.
