Jim Donovan grew up in Los Angeles and was a frequent visitor to the Universal Studios theme park. At the age of 10 he started to make Super 8 films but shortly thereafter his family moved to Montréal. When he finished high school he enrolled in Concordia University's Film Studies program. He began his career at a local TV station in Québec City where he did just about everything including vocing local commercials for the next two years. After directing some on-air promos for the TVA network for a few years, he started using his off days to direct music videos, or experimental short films. He ended up shooting more than 20 music videos which brought him to the attention of the Québec advertising industry where he directed commercials for such brands as Budweiser, Ford, Molson, GM, Saturn, Labatt Breweries, McDonald's, Tourism Quebec, Via Rail and many others, earning a few international awards along the way. From there he moved into feature and series directing. His 2004 film, Pure, had its world premier at the Calgary International Film Festival.
