François Girard

François Girard grew up in a family that was hooked on education. His grandfather was a talented musician and at first it appeared as if the young Girard would follow in those footsteps. Much of his early career and much of his film career has been centered around music. He began playing with video, creating experimental films based on architectural images and dance in the early 1980s. He made his feature-film debut with Cargo and four years later grabbed international attention with the film Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, which he co-wrote with Don McKellar. Extending his talent to the stage, he made his debut as an opera director with Symphony of Psalmes and Oedipus Rex by Igor Stravinski and Jean Cocteau which went on to win eight Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
