Arthur Lipsett started as an editor at the National Film Board in 1958 and worked on a number of Norman McLaren's unique film compositions. His own work began with cutting together existing footage to produce films that were often highly critical of the culture of the day. He left the NFB in the early 1970s and soon stopped making films altogether. He took his own life in 1986. Award-winning US filmmaker George Lucas has stated it was Lipsett's film 21-87 that inspired and influenced him when he was a film student at the University of Southern California.
