Fletcher Markle began his career in radio the late 1930s and early 1940s in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was part of a loosely knit group that included John Drainie, Lister Sinclair, Bernard Braden and Alan Young. With the outbreak of WWII in 1939, the group began to gravitate to Toronto. Fletcher became one of about 70 Canadian writers who wrote scripts for Andrew Allan's Stage series on CBC radio, one of the major factors in CBC's drama revolution. He also wrote for a weekly wartime drama series called Comrades in Arms. Markle moved on to New York City where, among other things, he contributed to the CBS radio anthology, Studio One, which he later brought to television.
