Although born in Chatham, Byron McKim grew up in the small town of Dresden about 20 kilometres away. His career began on stage in Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre in and around Toronto in early the 1990s. His interest turned to directing film and he moved to Vancouver to enroll, and subsequently graduate from the Vancouver Film School with a Certificate of Excellence in 1993. In 1994 he joined the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) as a Production Assistant and worked in the film until he was experienced enough become Location Manager all the while directing his own projects between his DGC gigs. Returning to Toronto in 2003, he began a steady career as a director in television. In 1995 he wrote, produced and directed the short, Back to Turtle Island, which brought him his first award. His full-time work in the film industry meant he had weekends to work on his own projects including directing music videos and commercials. In 2001 he produced & directed a one hour television performing arts program for the Canadian specialty channel, Bravo! titled Quest. It received two Gemini Award nominations, including one for directing. His 2004 award-winning short The King of Siam was invited to screen at the Cannes Film Festival and in 2007 he produced & directed the six part performing arts Bravo! program Dancing with Spirit, which was nominated for three Gemini Awards. In 2010 McKim announced the start of work on his first feature film, Steam, to be shot in the Toronto/Hamilton area in the winter of 2010.
