Peter Mettler became interested in film at an early age, making his first films when he was 18-years-old. He went on to make Lancalot Freely (1980) and Gregory (1981), and the award-winning feature film Scissere (1982). In addition to his own work as a director, Mettler is an acclaimed cinematographer, working with Atom Egoyan on his first two films, as well as the early works of Patricia Rozema, Bruce McDonald, Jeremy Podeswa, Ron Mann, and many other independent film makers in the 1980s.
