Colleen Murphy was born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec but grew up in a small town north of Lake Superior. She studied acting at Ryerson University and at the Strasberg Institute in New York. Her first screenplay, Termini Station, received a 1990 Genie nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 1990. As a director resident at the Canadian Film Centre in 1994 and 1995, Murphy completed her second short film The Feeler which won a Golden Sheaf Award for Best Performance at the 1996 Yorkton Film Festival and was nominated for a Genie for Best Short Film in 1996. She directed the feature Shoemaker, which premiered at the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival, and won the Audience Choice Award. It was nominated for three Genie Awards in 1998. Her play, The December Man (L’homme de décembre), won the 2007 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama, the CAA/Carol Bolt Award for Drama and the 2006 Enbridge playRites Award.
