Charles Martin Smith received a B.A. in theatre from California State University, Northridge, and came to prominence as one of the young stars of George Lucas’ classic American Graffiti. Over the years he has starred in such acclaimed films as Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Buddy Holly Story, Brian DePalma’s The Untouchables, and John Carpenter’s Starman. While working on the 1983 movie, Never Cry Wolf, which he wrote and starred in, he decided that he wanted to become more involved in the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking. He moved to Vancouver, where he made several short films and helped found the Vancouver Shakespeare Festival. In 1986 he made his feature film directorial debut with the rock and roll film Trick or Treat (1986) for Dino DeLaurentis. In 1992, he directed Peter Weller in Fifty Fifty, and the premiere two-hour made-for-TV movie that launched the WB series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the small screen, Smith has directed the award winning series, Da Vinci’s Inquest and multiple episodes of the followup series Da Vinci’s City Hall. Charles followed the success of "Buffy" with Air Bud, which won the 1998 Genie Award's Golden Reel for highest grossing Canadian feature. In 2004 he wrote and directed the feature film The Snow Walker which was nominated for 9 Genie Awards. These are his credits as a director.
