Roger Spottiswoode is the son of Raymond Spottiswoode, an ex-producer and technical planning officer with the National Film Board. Raised in England, he worked in television and as a documentary film editor. His work on three Sam Peckinpah films, Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972), and Pat Garrett (1973), shifted his career to the mainstream. He continued editing features and continued working in television but then in 1980 he made his directorial debut with Terror Train, starring Jamie Lee Curtis.
