Bruce Sweeney was born in Ontario but moved to British Columbia to study visual arts at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. He received a Masters degree in film from the University of British Columbia. Sweeney's first short film Betty and Vera Go Lawnbowling, won several awards and was screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival. This was followed by his feature debut, Live Bait, which received critical acclaim both in Canada and around the world. It was the winner of the $25,000 CITY-TV Prize for Best Canadian Film at the 1995 Toronto International Film Festival. Last Wedding, produced on a budget of only 1.3 million dollars was selected to be the official opening night gala film at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival.
