Stardom is Arcand-lite. Denys Arcand, Canada’s best-known satirist, turned his withering glance on the media attention given to the fashion industry. However, it’s like using a shotgun to blast a gnat. Tina Menzel (Paré), a teenaged hockey player from Cornwell, Ontario, is spotted on a local cable-television program and launched on a high-flying modelling career that takes her to the runways of the world. Arcand traces her rise and eventual return to Cornwell through mediated images such as television, talk shows, and an ever-present documentary filmmaker played by Robert Lepage. Unfortunately, the director appears to be slumming, and his take on celebrity and voyeurism is slight and dated.
