Ten-year-old Oscar, a patient in a children's hospital, suffers not only from a terminal cancer but also from the way grown-ups treat him: his parents, struggling to control their grief, try to hold up by never mentioning the hopeless situation, while the medical staff and his class teacher force themselves to laugh at the various pranks Oscar pulls in the hopes of provoking a reaction. One day, as he wanders around the hospital corridors after overhearing a conversation between his parents and his doctor, he bumps into a forty-year-old woman, dressed in pink, a former wrestler who vehemently scolds him. He immediately develops an unconditional friendship toward this woman, and demands her presence from the doctor. The latter then makes a deal with the ex-wrestler, whose only motivation for being in the hospital is the home-made pizzas she sells: the doctor will buy her specialties, and in exchange, she must spend Oscar's final days with him. Reluctant at first, the lady in pink slowly bonds with the dying boy, helping him accept the inexorable degeneration of his health and forgive his parents, all the while discovering her own capacity for love and compassion. Adapted by French author Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt from his novel, Oscar et la dame rose is a France-Belgium-Canada co-production.
