Les amours imaginaires, or Heartbeats in the non-literal English translation, tells the story of Francis (Xavier Dolan) and Marie (Monia Chokri), two friends head-over-heels in love with Nicolas (Niels Schneider), who may not give a damn about either one of them. The depth of unfulfilled romantic and sexual longing guarantees catastrophe.
Writer-director-actor Dolan made off with a trio of prizes in the Director's Fortnight at Cannes in 2009 for his debut feature, How I Killed My Mother. Les amours imaginaires is screening at Cannes 2010 in the Un Certain Regard program. Dolan has been quoted as saying his new film is “a young adult movie. It's about how we deal with rejection, loneliness, grief."
