About Us

Who We are?

Northernstars.ca began life as an idea for a television documentary series subtitled The Canadian History of Hollywood. With the advent of the world wide web, we repurposed our research and created the first version of this website, Northernstars.net, which went online on February 1, 1998. More than two and a half decades later we remain dedicated to creating a Canadian knowledge base about Canadian film and filmmakers, which includes television productions and more recently the internet. Over the years we expanded our efforts beyond the written word by starting a series of on-camera interviews and beginning an ever-growing collection of Canadian movie trailers. There is more to come. Much more.

What We Do?

In the simplest terms, our mission is to promote Canadian screen productions and the people involved in those films, television series and made-for-TV movies as well as internet series. But it’s a little more complicated than that. Part of that mission is education. Hollywood stars are household names and many Canadian actors have reached that high plateau. But many, most, have solid careers but don’t enjoy the name recognition that helps define star status. In addition to our ever-growing pages detailing performing careers, we try to add informative biographies, photos, many of them Northernstars™ originals, and we record on-camera interviews. We also help to preserve Canadian film history through the Northernstars™ Collection, which contains more than 1200 stills, lobby cards, posters, rare glass slides and more assembled over the past 27 years. Many of those images are used on the website. In short, we hope to provide a resource that is both educational and entertaining; a resource that will continue to grow over the coming years and live up to the name “a Canadian Cultural Institution.”
