Based on a 2002 short story, Amal is the name of the an Indian auto rickshaw driver who lives out his meagre, tiny life with grace and modesty against his daily struggle to survive. One day he drives an eccentric billionaire who, disguised as a vagabond, is searching the streets for the last morsel of humanity, and someone he can leave all his money to. For this man of wealth, Amal represents the basic goodness that seems to be seeping out of the world. Shortly after he decides to leave his fortune to this street person, he dies, and Amal`s life is on the cusp of unimaginable changes. Shot over 29 days in 44 locations in and around New Delhi, the feature, which had its premiere at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, was originally made as a short in 2004.
