This is the third Canadian film to star American actor Richard Dreyfuss. This time he plays a lonely widower named Angus Stewart who once upon a time dreamt of becoming an astronaut, a dream that slipped away a long, long time ago. Now living a retirement home, his life seems over; he feels worthless and alone. But one day the dream explodes when Angus learns of a national competition. The prize? One ticket for a trip into space! Unfortunately Angus is way beyond the age-limit, but that doesn’t deter him, he simply changes his birthdate so he can enter the competition. Against all odds, but with help from his dysfunctional family, he must battle against preconceptions, ill health and time, to win the ticket and take the trip of his long lost dreams. Astronaut marks the feature directorial debut of actress-turned-filmmaker Shelagh McLeod. |
