90 minutes – Documentary Release Date: April 25, 2008 DVD release date: September 2, 2008 Distributor: Mongrel Media
The international success of Deepa Mehta’s Oscar-nominated film Water, which is about an eight-year-old child bride who is widowed and sent to an ashram to live out her remaining days in penitence and extreme poverty, caused a dramatic rise in curiosity about the state of widows in India today. The Forgotten Woman was made in direct response to this interest. When Dilip Mehta learned that some 40 million women lived in the same conditions today he was appalled and felt compelled to make a documentary about the contemporary realities behind the historical fiction. The film opens in the ancient temple city of Vrindavan with striking images of thousands of widows living in poverty. The Forgotten Woman examines the general status of widows today as compared to the past and attests to the intense research conducted by the filmmakers and is truthful to the findings that indicate that although there has been a positive change in the state of widows in India over the past few decades, there is still an enormous stigma and exploitation of widows, which prevents them from living their lives with any basic human rights. This documentary takes the camera into the ashrams and onto the streets, where millions of Indian widows are still forced by age-old tradition to live their remaining years isolated from and shunned by society. The film is in Hindi, Bengali and English with English subtitles.

Based on the characters in the popular series aimed at mid-teens, Life with Derek, this made-for-television movie, Vacation with Derek costars most of the same cast. Derek (Michael Seater) and Casey (Ashley Leggat) continue their sibling rivalry during a family vacation to visit their grandmother at her beautiful lake front lodge. Things heat up for Casey when she meets Jesse, a handsome young dancer who is a waiter at the lodge. Not quite Dirty Dancing, but the scenes are reminiscent. Meanwhile as Derek is chilling on his vacation, he falls for Roxy, the rich girl who lives across the lake. But when Roxy`s father, a greedy land developer, threatens to destroy the natural beauty around them, the McDonald-Venturi kids band together to save the lake and the lodge.

So you want to be a super hero? Well, you’ve got to start somewhere, and in the world of 4 colour adventures, that somewhere is the Sidekick. Computer consultant Norman Neale has two great loves in this cruel world: Comic books and his offices’ effervescent main receptionist, Andrea Hicks. Norman spends his days dreaming of Andrea from the isolation of his cubicle and his nights dreaming of fighting crime from the solitude of his apartment. Norman discovers that a fellow co-worker, Victor Ventura, a swaggering, pretty-boy salesman, has slight telekinetic abilities beyond his understanding. After discussing his mind-blowing discovery with his only friend Chuck, a know-it-all comic book store owner, Norman comes to the outlandish conclusion that he should train Victor to become a real-life superhero by helping him refine and expand his extraordinary ability. Norman envisions an exciting new future for himself battling the citys’ criminal elements as Victors’ faithful sidekick. Unfortunately, as Victor gains mastery over his powers, Norman is faced with the heartbreaking realization that not all people with extraordinary abilities are meant to be heroes.
Sidekick premiered at the Calgary Film Festival in September of 2005.
