Based on the lyrical Alice Munro short story The Bear Came Over the Mountain and Executive Produced by Atom Egoyan, the film tells the story of an aging married couple, playing by Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie. Pinsent plays the role of a married man who strayed often enough from the marriage bed to be called a philanderer. Now his wife of many years begins to develop Alzheimer`s and soon begins to forget him after she is placed in a nursing home. Worse, in terms of their relationship, she becomes attracted to another patient, played by Michael Murphy. Sarah Polley, who has directed a number of short films, was the recipient of the 2006 Award of Excellence from ACTRA, the Canadian actors union. In early 2008 the film won seven Genie Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. Northernstars.ca chose Away From Her as one of its Top 10 Canadian Films of the Decade in December of 2009.
