Roger Cantin became passionate about 8mm filmmaking in the 1960s when he was still quite young. He quickly became a prolific independent filmmaker, working as a writer, director, editor or producer on some 30 short films. Later he became known for his experiments with special effects and many of his films have won awards and other distinctions. In 1985, he co-scripted André Melançon’s La Guerre des Tuques, and beginning in 1990 he began to direct his own scripts.
