Tommy Chong (on the right, above) is a Grammy Award-winning comedian and part of the legendary comedy team Cheech & Chong. During their reign, they recorded six gold comedy albums, including the 1974 Grammy winner Los Cochinos. They also starred in seven films, most of which Chong co-wrote and directed. Famous, or infamous for playing a character who is very much into marijuana, Chong claims he has never been more than an occasional user and the character he plays is simply a mix of observation and exaggeration. When not acting, Chong is clear-headed, soft-spoken, and articulate. In 2003, his home was raided by the US Drug Enforcement Agency and more than a pound of pot was found. Oddly, because the DEA had not listed marijuana on the search warrant it was inadmissible as evidence. Instead, Chong was prosecuted for possessing “drug paraphernalia” including water pipes made by the Chong Glass Company, an enterprise he co-owns with his wife, and their son Paris. Chong eventually agreed to a plea bargain and spent nine months in prison, in exchange for the feds dropping charges against his wife and son. Also see Rae Dawn Chong |
