Grace (Lauren Lee Smith) had not spoken to her recently deceased father, the fabled Québécois filmmaker John Laurentian, in years. So she’s completely surprised when back home to sort through some of his belongings, she spontaneously offers to help put together a retrospective of his work. What makes it surprising is she knows virtually nothing about his work and has never seen any of his films. Additionally, she knows nothing about curating. To top it all off, Grace is a bit of a shut-in. She rarely ventures outside the condo she shares with her husband, Ben (Ben Cotton). But in for a penny in for a pound, as they say, once committed she does her best, often struggling, sometimes dozing off while watching her father’s movies (all of them involving love triangles), and discussing her inertia with her confidante, Clementine (Jennifer Beals). Cinemanovels had its World Premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. |
