Cloudburst began life as film screenplay that first saw the light of day when it was produced as a stage play. It made its debut at the Plutonium Playhouse in Halifax and was immediately hailed as a knock-out. It went on to win the 2011 Merritt Award as the best new play of the year. The play was described as “down-to-earth and richly humorous.” The story is essentially a lesbian road-trip comedy, but don’t think Thelma and Louise. This is a very different road. Cloudburst stars Oscar winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker playing a couple that has lived as lovers for 30 years and decide to bust out of the nursing facility where one of them has been committed. On the road they pick up a young, male hitchhiker. |
