Elijah Wood plays Norval, whose life has been, to put it lightly, difficult. He’s an LA hipster who grew up with his mother in affluent Beverly Hills and is coming off alcohol-related struggles. Just five when his father (Stephan McHattie) abandoned him 30 years ago, Norval receives an invitation to visit him at his remote cabin, amidst
a forest on a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean. Hoping that reconnecting with his father will give him the emotional fulfillment he’s been lacking, Norval quickly realizes something is decidely off about his dad, an uneasy feeling triggered by inappropriate comments and a possible over-dependence on booze. Recognizing that a father/son bonding is doomed, he finds himself in waking nightmare.
Shot in Tofino, British Columbia (standing in for coastal Oregon), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand-Canada-Ireland coproduction. This film marks New Zealander Ant Timpson’s feature film directorial debut.
