Denis Héroux wanted to become a teacher when he collaborated with Denys Arcand and Stéphane Venne on the 1962 film about life as a student, Seul ou avec d’autres. He also became involved in film production and international co-production in the last half of the 1970s and was behind such flms as 1980’s Atlantic City, the cult hit Quest for Fire in 1981 and the 1991 Canada-Australia co-production Black Robe. He won a Best Picture Genie for Les Plouffe in 1981 and again in 1985 for The Bay Boy. He also received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture for 1980’s Atlantic City (1980). Denis Héroux was given an Order of Canada in 1983 for his work in the film industry. Héroux was 75 when he died in Montréal.
