Domee Shi, animator, director,

B: 1989 in Chongqing, China

Domee Shi, who moved with her family to Toronto, Ontario when she was two, and is a storyboard artist, writer and director at renowned animation studio Pixar, a division of the Disney empire. It has been suggested that her 2018 short, Bao, “might be the weirdest thing yet produced at Pixar.” That’s because it’s the story of a woman and the dumpling she raises as her son after it comes unexpectedly to life. Shi grew up in Toronto and studied animation at Sheridan College before becoming a Pixar storyboard artist. Bao won a 2019 Academy Award in the Best Animated Short Film category. Shi also worked on the storyboards for Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, and is the first woman in Pixar’s 32-year history to direct a short film at the studio. A longer project is in the planing stages but no details of that project are yet available. We list her credits as a Director first.
