Set in the 1980s in Ireland, the film is a fictionalized retelling of the real life of then 22-year-old Martin McGartland who published a book under this same title. McGartland worked as an agent helping the British Special Branch during the height of “The Troubles,” as the war between the British Army and the Irish Republican Army raged on the streets of Belfast and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. The book and film take their title from the the fact that McGartland`s information helped save the lives of more than 50 people as he moved up the ranks inside the IRA. He lived his life under constant threat of exposure and death.
