Set in the 1980s in a world that has suddenly discovered cash machines, High Life recounts what happens when ringleader Dick reconnects with Bug, his long-standing partner in crime, who’s fresh out of prison. Their reunion takes an unexpected turn when Bug gets Dick fired from the first straight job he’s ever held and suddenly Dick’s steady stream of cash and narcotics runs dry. Honour among thieves figures large in this story: Dick can’t ever stay angry at Bug and, besides, he owes him for doing time on his behalf. Still, Dick needs cash fast so he hatches a plan to pay back Bug, clear the slate and make a fresh start. But things go wrong with the arrival of neurotic Donnie and his brilliant ATM scam, and young Billy, the charming front man. The movie is based on Lee MacDougall’s play High Life, which won a Dora Mavor Moore award, and received a nomination for a Governor General’s Award in 1996. |
