John Ireland

John Benjamin Ireland grew up in New York City where his first brush with show biz came as a professional swimmer in an aquatic carnival. He started his acting career on the stage in stock and on Broadway and gravitated to film in the mid-1940s. Though he was often cast as the lead, he is best remembered for his supporting roles. In fact he received a Best Supporting Actor Nomination for his work in All the Kings Men. He also made a lot of very good television programs but the stage was his first love, and he remained active in theatre all his life. Low-budget Italian, action, and horror films kept him working well into the 1980s. John Ireland died of leukemia at age 78.
