Hubert Minel dislikes his mother. For almost all of his sixteen years he has been highly irritated by his mother’s bad-taste, outraged by her lack of culture – she’s a suburban soap lover, he is an artist – repulsed by her tacky personality, he tries to remember the glorious days of his childhood when they were nearly best friends. He attempts to make amends and reconnect with her several times, but in vain. They are obviously incompatible. Hubert`s secret encounters with his teacher, Julie, a repressed woman in search of liberty, his philosophic chats with his boyfriend, Antonin, and his poetic writing are all an inherent part of Hubert’s world. Exploring typical zones of the coming-of-age era – friendship, sexuality, school, self-discoveries – Hubert finds himself lost on the road of reconciliation, as peace with his mother seems impossible, and the dichotomous mystery of their hatred won’t unravel. |
