B: February 25, 1953 in Cowley, Alberta
Geordie Johnson won a Gemini Award in 2000 for a role he played in an episode of The City. In the series Largo Winch, which is based on a popular French comic book, he played the role of an ex-KGB agent and computer specialist named Georgy Kerensky. Johnson grew up in Cowley in the foothills of Alberta. He worked summers and weekends during high school in the sawmill founded by his grandfather in the 1920s and then run by his father in the 1960s. In an interview in 1990, Johnson recalled, “My job was tough and dangerous work, breaking logs into two by four studs. You could easily lose an eye to wood splinters flying out of the saw if you weren’t careful.” Not wanting a future at the sawmill, he earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Calgary where he studied acting and directing in styles ranging from the Italian 16th century commedia dell’arte to Shakespeare. Upon graduation from college, he joined an improvisational acting company and travelled across British Columbia, Alberta and Vancouver Island. He eventually left the troupe and struck out on his own, moving to Toronto in 1980. Johnson performed a wide rage of theatrical roles, notably at the Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, and at the renowned Stratford Festival. He won a DORA award for his portrayal of a violent dimwit in Judith Thompson’s drama I Am Yours. Geordie Johnson plays the role of Professor Freund in the 2019 biopic of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, On the Basis of Sex. |
