(June 7, 2024 – Toronto, ON) Did you know the average Canadian spends $35.21 per month on coffee. Coffee. You know where it ends up, right? You may have noticed the new Northernstars.ca doesn’t have any advertising. Our illustrious and sometimes mercurial founder hated Google Ads about toe fungus ruining the look of our website. So…now how are we going to grow?

There wasn’t a whole lot of discussion. He’s a great listener and was a terrific boss in radio (I worked for him) but when his mind is made up, that’s it.

“Dave,” he said, remembering my name, “You’re going to head up the Membership Division…“
“The what….?”
“…and everyone who wants to help us support Canadian film should be able to afford a buck-a-month, right?”
“Uh…”

And that’s why I’m here. We were driven offline by sophisticated hackers in Bulgaria or Russia or the Netherlands or China or… Just staying protected these days can cost a few thousand dollars a year. We know the next time we have to shut down, that’ll be it. We won’t be coming back. But, with a donation of just a buck-a-month, paid annually, you can help keep us online and the longer we’re online the more we can grow.

What do you get for your annual membership fee? Good question. At just 12 bucks, it isn’t going to be much, but we are working on a few ideas. We might be able to coax some movie passes out of a few movie chains, but that sounds like something we used to do in radio decades ago. We’re working on some pretty cool stuff. Trust me. My job depends on it and my old/new boss has a silver-plated axe cradled on his desk with the inscription You’re Next.
