Mia Kirshner grew up in a highly literate home, her Bulgarian-born mother, Etti, was an English teacher, and her German-born father, Sheldon, was a journalist for The Canadian Jewish News. Her initial interest was in journalism, but she was captivated by the idea of acting after seeing Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. She began her career at just 18 years of age making 3 films in quick succession including playing the role of a dominatrix in Denys Arcand`s Love and Human Remains. The very next year she appeared as a young stripper with a surprising past in Atom Egoyan`s widely acclaimed film, Exotica. Although her career was off to a solid start, she continued her education at McGill University in Montréal, studying 19th Century Russian Literature and taking a minor in film. |
