Adapted from the acclaimed 1998 novel by Gaétan Soucy, La petite fille qui aimait trop les allumettes (The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches) is set in rural Québec in the 1930s. It’s the story of a young girl who has been bullied at the very heart of her identity. Her father makes believe that she is a boy. Raised in this emotional and intellectual poverty, she is subjected to the dictates of her violent father and brother, yet seeks to understand where she comes from. She finds a book forgotten by her father, which becomes a source of knowledge for her. Knowledge that she has been deprived of all her life. One day, during a walk in the forest, her brother catches her reading. Enraged, he jumps on her and rapes her. When the father discovers that she is pregnant, his anger surges and the result changes the destiny of this singular family forever. |
