Le Gala du cinéma Québécois was created following the publication of a book about famed director Claude Jutra in late 2015, which contained allegations he was a pedophile. Cinéma Québec moved quickly to distance their long-running annual awards show from his name and it was announced that Les Prix Jutra, or the Jutra Awards, and the annual event which went by the name La Soirée Jutra would be no more.
For 2016 and 2017 the annual event would be called Le Gala du cinéma Québécois. In 2018 the awards were renamed Les Prix Iris.
